ID: MS/004
Extent: 6.0 Linear Feet
Other Note: The Houston Symphony Chorus began as the Houston Chorale, organized by Alfred Urbach in 1946. Urbach was principal cellist with the orchestra at the time.

The first rehearsal was held on October 29, 1946 at the old Houston Conservatory of Music with 30 members. By January 1947, the membership was closed at 75 members. The first annual concert was given by the Houston Chorale in 1947. Then, as now, the members of the group are unpaid volunteers.

The Chorale’s official affiliation with the Houston Symphony began in April 1949, as they sang the Beethoven Ninth with the orchestra under Efrem Kurtz. As the chorus did more work on a regular basis with the orchestra, the HSS provided salaries for the conductor and accompanist and bought music.

In 1968, the Chorale was renamed the Houston Symphony Chorale, and in 1986 it became the Houston Symphony Chorus.
