Brief Description: The bulk of the papers include approximately 180 pieces of correspondence with notable percussionists and conductors, military discharge papers, curriculum vitae, an autobiography, several 1955 pops programs, 16 photographs and published articles. Photographs were removed to the Photography Collection.

Of note are letters to and from Karl Glassman, timpanist of the NBC Symphony, and Saul Goodman, timpanist of the New York Philharmonic, Ernst Hoffmann, Leopold Stokowski, and an original music fragment by Stokowski.

Acquired: 07/18/2006. Additional items from David Wuliger’s estate were donated by Ginny Garrett, his student, former percussionist extra player with the Houston Symphony and retired Houston Symphony Education Director. These items include copies of letters from Ernst Hoffman, Leopold Stokowski, and an original music fragment by Stokowski. Additional items were contributed by John Randolph in January and September 2014.
Biographical Note for Wuliger, David (1921-1998): David Wuliger was born October 21, 1921 in Cleveland, Ohio. He studied at the Cleveland School of Music and the Berkshire Festival. His important teachers were Saul Goodman and Karl Glassman.

Wuliger played as timpanist at the Cleveland Orchestra during the summer season of 1942. In World War II, he served from 1942-46 in the 386th Army Service Forces Band. From 1946 to 1986 he was principal timpanist of the Houston Symphony. He appeared as soloist with the orchestra several times during his forty year tenure and also toured with the Boston Symphony in the summer of 1960.

In 1949 he became the head of the Percussion Studio at the University of Houston School of Music, retiring from UH in 1984. He died July 2, 1998.

Acquisition Notes: John Randolph, Ronald Holdman  The Archives received these papers as a gift of John Randolph and principal timpanist Ronald Holdman. John Randolph is the son of former Houston Symphony musician Herman Randolph and Sandra Randolph, and received the papers from David Wuliger’s estate.
