Scope and Contents: Contains materials related to gifts to the Houston Symphony's endowment fund. The first endowment gift to the Houston Symphony was a $10,000 gift from General and Mrs. Maurice Hirsch in 1950, with the purpose stated as to begin a fund for building a new hall. The endowment fund was created in 1950 as a part of the Houston Symphony Society. In late 1962 additional endowment monies were solicited for two funds, the Louise Barbirolli Memorial Fund and the N.D. Naman Memorial Fund. The first large endowment gift was a $2,000,000 challenge grant in 1966 from the Ford Foundation, with five years to match the funds.

In 2006 the Houston Symphony Endowment was incorporated as a separate entity. It is administered by a group of six trustees, with two appointed each year by the Executive Committee of the Houston Symphony Society to serve three year terms. The Endowment receives contributions that are restricted by the donors to be used for investments and not for current operating expenses. At the discretion of the Endowment Trustees, the Endowment may make contributions to the Houston Symphony Society to be used for operations.
