Included are materials relating to his tenure as President of the Houston Symphony Society. Copies of Hirsch’s opening night concert speeches, letters for the programs, and other various presentations are included. Arrangements for a party following the opening of Jones Hall with Sir John Barbirolli, as well as a reception for André Previn, are documented.
Of particular note is correspondence relating to the tenure of André Previn as conductor, including copies of correspondence to and from André Previn, his agent Ronald Wilford, staff memos, and letters from the public. Other correspondents include the Symphony’s General Manager Tom Johnson, Miss Ima Hogg, and Sir John Barbirolli. There is also correspondence regarding the Committee on Unamerican Activities.
Biographical Note: Born on January 13, 1890, Maurice Hirsch was the son of Jules Hirsch of Alsace-Lorraine and Theresa Meyer, a member of the first board of directors of the Houston Symphony Society. His sister Rosetta was the first instrumental performer to appear with the orchestra as a soloist.
A graduate of Harvard Law School, Hirsch was a partner in the law firm Hirsch and Westheimer. He served in the War Department during World War II and was promoted to Brigadier General in 1946. In the next year he married Winifred Busby.
Succeeding Ima Hogg as President of the Houston Symphony Society in 1956, General Hirsch was still presiding over the Society when Jesse H. Jones Hall for the Performing Arts became the new home of the Houston Symphony in 1966. Maurice Hirsch died on August 5, 1983.
Custodial History: General Hirsch's estate transferred four boxes of papers to the Symphony. Stored in a lower level of Jones Hall, most were not recoverable from the June 2001 flood, but some documents were saved.
