Archives staff initiated a series of interviews with longtime board members, staff and orchestra members.

Phyllis Tucker, past president of the Houston Symphony League, spoke with Judy DeMoss in May 2002 about her tenure as president, with references to the music appreciation program, the 25th Anniversary of the League, Sir John and Lady Evelyn Barbirolli, Ima Hogg, Nettie Jones, Jeanette Jaworski, WASO, TWASO, and Maurice Hirsch.

In a series of three two-hour interviews in 2002-03, Raphael Fliegel, concertmaster of the Houston Symphony for many years, described his early life, musical training, and his life as a musician with the Houston Symphony.

Carl Cunningham, music critic, contributed his 2004 interview with George R. Mitchell, developer of the Woodlands and the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.

An informal interview with former staff member Joyce Williams Tankersley Beckwith was conducted at the Symphony offices as she described photographs and clippings she donated to the Archives. Mrs. Beckwith was the former secretary to longtime Houston Symphony General Manager Tom Johnson.

Four interviews were conducted by two students in an oral history class at the University of Houston. The topic of the interviews was the Symphony’s contract negotiations. They obtained personal histories and views of the contract process from two orchestra musicians, Philip Stanton and David Waters, and from two board members, Ulyesse LeGrange and Walter Sapp.

Recently-retired stage manager Don Jackson spoke with the archivists about his 40+ year history with the Houston Symphony in 2006. Retired Houston Symphony musicians Bill and Bea Rose also shared reminiscences with the archivists in 2006.
